I’ve spent the weekend celebrating a “big” birthday for my husband. All our sons and their families arrived to spend it with us here in NY, and it’s been wonderful. Since birthdays are much on my mind, I found a wonderful birthday poem to share with you. Crossroads by Joyce Sutphen isn’t simply about celebration, it’s about what she plans to do with the second half of her life. Read and enjoy.

I hope I have the courage to live the second half of my life my way .. it gave me much to think about this Sunday morning ..

This poem really spoke to me. I began the second half of my life in 2010, the year between my 51st and 52nd birthdays. After my open heart surgery to fix a birth defect that I never knew I had until it tried to kill me. I looked at my life and said it is time for some major changes. I retired in 2011 after teaching over 26 years, though the decision was made before my 52nd birthday in 2010. I put me first and started to do the things I love more, including cooking from scratch, quilting, reading and just enjoying life. I find time to play and celebrate everyday. I still sub, because I love the kids, but I will not return to being a special education teacher with all the stress, meetings, and mounds of paperwork. I am new and I will do things my way and yes I am thinking that I may color my hair purple just because I think it would be fun to make people stop and stare. Enjoying my life everyday!
What a positive view of the second half of life. I enjoyed it.
