Sunday Poetry: The Uncooked Vanilla Pudding of Life

Welcome to Sunday Poetry. If this is your first visit you can read about the purpose and inspiration of my Sunday poetry blogs here.

Hold on to your hat today.  Or don’t, because if you do, you might lose your edge, and The Edge is where I want to be, by Lisa Martinovic, is our Sunday poem.

The Edge is slam poetry, (although if you go to that Poetry Slam link,  you’ll see that Poetry Slam Inc. claims there is no such thing).

I first heard The Edge in church, when my husband used it as a reading.  I can’t tell you the number of people who have asked him for this afterwards, and I can’t believe I haven’t shared it with you before now.  This poem can change your life, if you let it.

Lisa Martinovic is the Co-Chair of the Ozark Poets & Writers Collective, and served for three years on the Executive Council of Poetry Slam, Inc., the national governing body for the growing world of slam.  The Edge and other poetry like it are written to be spoken out loud, and I can attest to how powerful this one is when read to an audience.

Those of you who are uncomfortable with certain words may be uncomfortable with a few in this poem, but I hope you’ll overlook that and read it anyway.

Remember, we read poetry together here for the pure pleasure of the experience. There are no quizzes, no right ways to read or contemplate the poem we share. Absolutely no dissecting allowed. Just come along for the “read.” What line, word or thought will you carry with you this week? If you’d like to tell us where the poem took you? We’ll listen.

Remember, too, there is a special giveaway in progress for those who comment on any Sunday Poetry blog before year’s end.  See the details here.

At 55, I realize I have been too far from the edge for too long. I want to live until I die! Thanks, Emilie!

This poem really has that effect, doesn’t it? It’s just so energizing, and so provocative.

It is hard to take that step to the edge? How can I get the courage to do so?

    Dear Emilie,
I just discovered your blogpost featuring my poem, The Edge. I am so touched that it moved you enough to share it. Knowing that my work has inspired others is gratifying on the deepest level. Thank you.

Lisa, what an honor to have you contact me. I love this poem, have loved it since the first time my husband used it in a worship service, will always count it among my very favorites. As an author I love to find out that something I’ve written has made a difference, but it always surprises me. Think of all the “differences” we’ll never know about. I’m glad you learned of this one. Thank you for your insights and the pure magic of your words.
